Symbicort Inhaler

Symbicort inhaler/turbuhaler is an oral inhalation corticosteroid aerosol, which is used to combat severe asthma and COPD. When asthma does not respond to other medications, such as short acting bronchodilators (also known as reliever inhalers), Symbicort inhaler is prescribed to the patients.

It can be used as a preventer as well as reliever inhaler. Therefore, you might not need any other inhaler if your doctor has prescribed it for you. Symbicort inhaler provides instant relief to patients suffering from wheezing, long-term cough and/or shortage of breath.

It comprises of a combination of Budesonide and micronized formoterol fumarate dehydrates, which, when taken in the right dosage, delivers relief to the lungs and makes breathing easier.

There are two dosages available. These two dosages are recommended by doctors depending on the severity of the asthma symptoms experienced by a patient.

Symbicort 80/4.5

  1. Budesonide = 80 mcg
  2. Formoterol fumarate dehydrate = 4.5 mcg

It is recommended for patients having a lesser intense degree of asthma symptoms.

Symbicort 160/4.5

  1. Budesonide = 160 mcg
  2. Formoterol fumarate dehydrate = 4.5 mcg

It is for patients with severe asthma.

  • The Symbicort inhaler needs to be taken in as 2 puffs everyday with a gap of 12 hours.
  • If the condition of the asthma patient worsens, the doctor may prescribe a higher dosage of the Symbicort inhaler.

Directions for use:

The Symbicort inhaler needs to be shaken well before use. When using it for the first time, 2 sprays of it need to be released in the open and only then it should be inhaled. In case the inhaler has not been used over a span of 7 days, the same procedure needs to be undertaken before the process of the oral inhalation.
